THE MUSIC IN DUKE
Music plays an important role in DUKE, and Gabriel Dib did a beautiful job creating the score and sound design for the film. He is known for his music contributions on feature films such as McFarland (Disney), Drumline: A New Beat (VH1) and numerous TV shows including Castle, The Family (ABC) and Criminal Minds.
His career began in São Paulo, Brazil, playing with local bands, writing music, and producing audio for commercials. After a decade in the music industry in Brazil,Gabriel moved to Chicago in 2011 to get his MFA in Film Scoring at Columbia College. In 2013, he moved to Los Angeles where he has collaborated with several composers writing additional music for TV shows and films.
“Duke’s story inspired me in two different levels, through Duke’s personal achievement of communicating with his family and on a broader spectrum while providing the world awareness on an important development in understanding autism and how to interact with people affected by it. In order to translate these sentiments to music I explored a micro universe of very specific sounds to connect the audience to an autistic teenager’s personal space and created layers of sounds to connect to the above mentioned importance of what is presented in the film on a level beyond Duke’s achievement, that shows the public possibilities for people to communicate with their autistic family members. Duke’s original score brings lush waves of timbres for precise piano melodies to sail into our ears and hearts, along with this moving story brilliantly directed by Thiago Dadalt.” - Gabriel Dib.
Sigur Rós is an Icelandic avant-rock band. Known for their ethereal sound, frontman Jónsi's falsetto vocals, and the use of bowed guitar, the band's music incorporates classical and minimal aesthetic elements.
The band was a big inspiration during the process of making DUKE. Both Thiago and Gabriel are big fans of the band and decided their song was the right line to follow. Their music has been featured in films such as Vanilla Sky, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Mysterious Skin and most recently, Beautiful Boy. DUKE got a world wide licenses of the single "Tornado", which plays in the end credits.
